Once the client has contacted me by phone, I will establish what the client would like and then arrange an initial meeting, generally in the comfort of the home, to further discuss requirements. I will also bring along fabric books, paint charts and wallpaper books if needed. This really saves the client precious time and energy from travelling from shop to shop.

Discussion then takes place about the colours, fabric choice, window treatment and whether new tracks and poles are needed. The design of the curtain and blind will also be discussed and whether pelmets, coordinating cushions or any upholstery is required.

I can advise on paint colour and wallpaper, but the final decision is the client’s.

If curtains and blinds are not suitable for the window or the look the client is after, then Venetian blinds, roller blinds or shutters may be the alternative and can be supplied.

A quote is then submitted for approval and a deposit towards the fabric or custom made blinds will be required before commencing any work. The balance to be paid on completion.

Once the quote has been accepted, if necessary, my fitter will install tracks or poles and then provide me with the final measurements.

I hand sew as much as possible, so that stitches are discreet and give a professional finish. Curtains and blinds may be interlined in order to drape more beautifully and to help give extra insulation to the room. Different curtain headings are available along with trimmings which add a beautiful finishing touch.

My fitter or myself will come to fit the curtains and blinds.

I have had some clients who have been so happy with the work that they have almost been in tears! Also, a number of doubting partners have been converted to the value of investing in made to measure curtains and instantly see the difference they make.

Handmade curtains and blinds are worth the investment as they truly enhance a room, look beautiful and have longevity….

The Curtain Co, which is based in Purley, Surrey was established in 2006. Helen Mackenzie, the founder, has an excellent reputation for designing and making curtains and soft furnishings. Her business has been built on repeat business and “word of mouth” recommendations. Previously, Helen was managing a luxury leather goods shop on Sloane Street.

Helen has been making curtains for 16 years now, starting off when her children were at school. Over the last ten years, she has grown the business from home, supplying fabrics, wallpapers and paints along with tracks and poles. Roller, vertical and Venetian blinds are offered as an alternative, if fabric isn’t your preference.

Helen loves putting ideas together, from vibrant, bright and fun colours to more muted, tranquil colour schemes, from modern to traditional, all tastes are catered for. Helen brings fabrics, paint cards and wallpaper samples to your home and is happy to leave them with you, or she can request larger samples of fabric, in order to help you make a more confident choice.

Helen is passionate about fabrics and really enjoys seeing the end result of the “design and make” process.
